Composition and Efficacy of Plant Essential Oils

Composition of Plant Essential Oils

01

There are many common types of plant essential oils, including floral essential oils such as rose oil and jasmine oil; leaf essential oils such as peppermint oil and lavender oil; as well as trunk essential oils such as sandalwood oil, agarwood oil, and cedarwood oil. In addition, there are fruit essential oils and fruit peel essential oils, among others.

Plant essential oils contain a variety of compounds, including terpenoids, aromatic compounds, aliphatic compounds (including alcohols, aldehydes, and esters), as well as nitrogen- and sulfur-containing compounds. Different components have different functions. Among them, monoterpenes are abundant components in plant essential oils, capable of regulating emotions, inducing a sense of relaxation, and possessing certain antibacterial activities. In the aroma composition of essential oils, alcohol substances can interact with other components to regulate the overall aroma intensity and quality.

Zhang Fenglan et al. used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to analyze the essential oil from the fruits of Pugionium cornutum (L.) Gaertn. and identified 41 compounds, mainly alkanes, acids, esters, alcohols, ethers, and alkenes. The compound with the highest relative content was cyclododecane, accounting for 10.073%.

Furthermore, the composition of plant essential oils obtained by different extraction methods also varies. Zhu Qingsong et al. extracted tea flower essential oil using an ultrasonic-assisted organic solvent method and detected 23 volatile components. In contrast, only 18 volatile components were detected in the essential oil extracted by the Soxhlet extraction method.

Efficacy of Plant Essential Oils

02

Currently, the applications of plant essential oils are continuously expanding across the fields of medicine, cosmetics, and food. In the medical field, plant essential oils are widely used to treat various diseases due to their biological activities such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. For example, clove essential oil exhibits significant inhibitory effects against Propionibacterium acnes and can be used to treat acne. Furthermore, plant essential oils can significantly improve cardiovascular diseases by scavenging oxygen free radicals, dilating blood vessels, and improving lipid metabolism.

In the cosmetics field, plant essential oils possess natural, safe, and highly effective characteristics. They can deeply nourish the skin, improve skin texture, and offer antioxidant and anti-aging benefits. For instance, lavender essential oil helps relax the mind and body and improve sleep quality; rose essential oil not only produces antibacterial effects but also makes the skin firmer and more elastic.

In the food sector, plant essential oils add rich flavors to foods with their unique aromas and tastes. At the same time, certain components in essential oils have preservative and antioxidant functions, helping to improve food quality and shelf life. For example, cinnamon essential oil and clove essential oil can be used for meat preservation; lemon essential oil and tea tree essential oil have good antioxidant properties and can be used for beverage preservation. Additionally, plant essential oils can be applied to fruit and vegetable preservation techniques, effectively preventing product spoilage and slowing down the loss of water and nutrients.

Traditional Plant Essential Oil Extraction Technologies

Traditional plant essential oil extraction technologies include steam distillation, mechanical pressing, and solvent extraction. Generally speaking, traditional extraction processes are simple to operate, require no complex equipment or high technical expertise, and the extraction cost is relatively low. However, the production process of traditional extraction technologies has a long cycle, which affects the yield and preparation efficiency of the essential oils.

Distillation Method

01

  • Water Boiling Distillation (Water Distillation)

Water boiling distillation is an extraction method in which plant material is heated together with water to boiling, causing the essential oil to evaporate along with the water vapor, which is then condensed to collect the essential oil. This method is suitable for extracting essential oils from raw materials with high boiling points, as it prevents the essential oil from overheating and damaging its chemical components. For example, when extracting essential oils from certain resinous plants, water boiling distillation can effectively separate the essential oil. Generally speaking, the equipment for water boiling distillation is relatively simple and easy to operate, but the extraction efficiency may be affected by the nature of the raw materials and operating conditions.

  • Direct Steam Distillation (Water-Steam Distillation)

In direct steam distillation, steam generated by a steam generator or boiler is injected through pipes into a container holding the plant material. The steam has relatively high pressure and temperature, which rapidly heats the material and quickly volatilizes the essential oil, which is then collected through condensation. This method directly injects steam into the plant material and features fast distillation speed and high distillation efficiency. For some plants with high oil content, such as mint and lavender, this method can achieve relatively high yields. However, the high-temperature, high-pressure steam may damage certain heat-sensitive components of the essential oil, causing excessive heating of the plant material and leading to scorching, which affects the quality of the essential oil.

Yang Qing et al. used this method to extract Damascus rose essential oil. The results showed that the optimal process parameters were: a material loading of 200 kg, extraction time of 4 hours, material-to-liquid ratio of 1:4, and reflux time of 2 hours. Under these conditions, the extraction yield of rose essential oil was the highest, reaching 3.19‰.

Mechanical Pressing

02

Mechanical pressing uses mechanical pressure to squeeze essential oil out of plant peels. This process does not involve heating, thus preserving the natural characteristics of the plant extract. The equipment for mechanical pressing is relatively simple and easy to operate. However, it is difficult to completely press out all the volatile oil from the plant, and the extraction efficiency is relatively low. Therefore, this method is less commonly used today. It is mainly suitable for extracting essential oils from the peels of fruits such as lemons, citrus, and pomelos.

Solvent Extraction

03

Solvent extraction is an extraction method that uses organic solvents to dissolve essential oils from plant materials, after which the solvent is evaporated to obtain the essential oil. This method allows for the selection of appropriate organic solvents—such as petroleum ether, ethanol, or acetone—based on the specific plant material and extraction requirements.

Wu Xiaoju et al. optimized parameters such as solid-to-liquid ratio, extraction time, and temperature during the organic solvent extraction of hyssop essential oil, increasing the essential oil yield to 1.093%.

Dai Weijie et al. investigated the effects of three solvents—water, anhydrous ethanol, and petroleum ether—on the composition of agarwood essential oil. The results showed that the composition of the extracts varied significantly depending on the solvent used, with ethanol yielding the highest essential oil content at 10.70%.

This method involves complex extraction steps and is relatively expensive. It is suitable for extracting fragile and valuable plant varieties such as jasmine and saffron. However, this method requires the use of large quantities of organic solvents for extraction, which can cause certain environmental pollution.

Standards for Plant Essential Oils

Quality standards for plant essential oils typically include aspects such as appearance, odor, and component content. Generally, plant essential oils are required to be liquid with no visible mechanical impurities. At the same time, the product quality of plant essential oils must meet specific indicator requirements, such as a pH value between 6.0 and 8.0 and passing emulsion stability tests. For plant essential oil products intended for the market, while these quality standards must be met, higher requirements are also placed on component purity, stability, and other aspects.

Currently, relatively comprehensive standards for plant essential oils exist abroad. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has established a series of standards related to plant essential oils, mainly covering relative density, optical rotation, refractive index, and various chemical property indicators (such as ester value, acid value, carbonyl value, and phenol content). For example, ISO 279 specifies the method for determining the relative density of essential oils at 20°C; ISO 280 specifies the determination of the refractive index of essential oils; ISO 4730 provides specifications for tea tree essential oil, defining its composition and quality requirements.

In China, common testing standards for plant essential oils include GB/T 27579-2011 Essential Oils, GB/T 39010-2020 Characterization of Essential Oils, and the recently introduced GB/T 42171-2022 Rose Essential Oil (Damask). China's standards for plant essential oils are continuously being improved and developed. Through these testing standards, the quality, safety, and efficacy of plant essential oils can be ensured, promoting the healthy development of the plant essential oil industry.
